Ah! My mind is overwhelmed with cries of "oh dear sweet jesus I need a job" so I'm not in the mood to post about my surreal fashion week experiences (courtesy of a kind and special little lady)...BUT...I have got to pause my career anxiety to shout,

"RODARTE YOU ARE KILLING MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

This last one is my fave.

Mustard? High waisted high waters? Tiny white socks that make you think of baby's breath? Unexpected necklines and cuts? The Rodarte ladies nailed all of my favorite things.

But isn't this supposed to be for Spring? This collection is so NOW. I'd love to wear any of this and sink into a bed of dead leaves...perfect camouflage, for those times when I want to hide my unemployed self from the world.

Sorry for my poor writing. Not that I'm typically your regular Shakespeare, but it's 1am and it's been an Abyss/Aliens double feature kinda night. My brain is freaked and fried.

Ummmm, my outfit.....wearing these Guess knickers purchased from an outlet store maybe three years ago. This was my first time wearing them. I have this thing about wearing clothes only when they call to be worn. I often don't wear something immediately after buying it. They gotta marinate! Anyhow, these pants finally felt ready to be worn. They were ready-to-wear! HAHAH, get it? OK, sorry, already said I was tired. Worn with some creamsicle-ish H&M peep toes, an old clearance Target off-the-shoulder top, secured on-the-shoulder by suspenders, leftover from a Halloween costume of Mike's. All topped off with a small portion of my broach collection.

I was watching an old episode of Sex and the City, "The Real Me", which featured Kevyn Aucoin as himself doing Carrie's makeup for NY Fashion Week. I suddenly got really down. Can't believe it's been eight years since he passed away. Tori Amos and he were close friends. This song is for him, so I put it on and plummeted further into my melancholy hole.

I think what made me most sad was thinking about the kind spirit Kevyn had. He truly believed that there was beauty inside everyone. Finding beauty within one's self came first, makeup was secondary and a mere tool to highlight that inner beauty. He had this magical ability to identify the strong parts of a woman, and to extract them for the world to see. Making Faces and Face Forward were instrumental to the development of my identity as a young lass. Memories of learning how to put on a pretty face with my sister brings pure joy to my little corazon. (Though, her makeup skills undoubtedly surpassed mine.) His philosophy on beauty was such an inspiration to me during those formative angsty years, so much so that I have to be honest and admit my fortunate escape from middle school malaise.

Thank you for that Kevyn.

Don't ask me why I was craving meatloaf during the summer! I've made meatloaf a few times before, but this time around I wanted to try a healthier version. I found a couple of turkey meatloaf recipes and made some alterations based on my current supplies and palate. Here's my recipe:

Turkey Meatloaf

1 lb. Ground Turkey
1 Slice Whole Wheat Bread
1 Egg
Handful of Spinach
1/2 Onion
5 Garlic Cloves
Olive Oil

Ketchup
Salt, Pepper, Oregano

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Heat olive oil and minced garlic in pan, add onions. In bowl mix ground turkey, egg, spinach, and crumbled bread. Add sautéed onions and garlic. Season with plenty of salt, pepper and oregano. Place into greased 8.5 x 2.5 dish and top with ketchup. Place in oven for 45 minutes to an hour, until turkey is cooked all the way through. Slice, garnish, enjoy.

I'm dairy-free, but if you like, milk or soy can be added to assist in holding the meat together. For my gluten-free peeps, try quinoa instead of whole wheat bread. And of course you can always sneak in peas or carrots to fool those pesky non-veggie eating kids. I put spinach in mine because, well, I love spinach, and I wanted my meatloaf to have a bit of color. You also don't need to sauté the onions and garlic, but I do because Mike's stomach is sensitive to onions. Pre-cooking them deactivates their ache-inducing compounds. And can you tell I like my garlic?! Next time I think I'll try a spicy version by adding jalapenos and chilli powder.

I made a side rosemary potato medley. How gorgeous are purple potatoes? You almost don't want to eat them. Almost.

The key to adding a kick to a simple salad? Green olives stuffed with pimentos.

Voila!

A little red wine to go with dinner. I'm trying to steer clear of alcohol because everything good in life seems to make me breakout. So, I'm trying to drink only red organic wines when I do drink. (So far I've been only mildly successful. Ok, ok, I'm failing miserably!) I found a decently priced red organic at a local Brooklyn wine shop. Luzon Verde.

Something sweet to end the meal.

Taken pre-move, but close enough to said move to demonstrate the apartment disaster created by moving. One of our last triple-date outings with dear LA friends. None of us actually took photos that night - we're getting bad at taking photos when we go out! What gives? Hit up an old haunt and a new joint where we were complete outcasts and enjoyed every conga-beating minute of it.

Wearing a stellar fringe poncho acquired at Ross circa 2001, thrifted abercrombie shorts (though I've never stepped foot in an actual abercrombie), clearance H&M tube top, and Cynthia Vincent for Target wedges.

When I saw these shoes in Self, I knew they had to be mine. But when the collection launched and everyone went cray cray for them, I thought it was a lost cause. One random Target day I spotted a lonely pair, in my size. Megahit.

Prior to our move Mike and I had seen a Campos Tacos being painted the most dazzling hue of pink. We thought they were undergoing a glamorous makeover, but turns out it was a Pinches Tacos moving into the 'hood.

We were able to eat there only once, but let it be known, they serve nopales!

But enough about Pinches Tacos, will you check out these boots por favor? Thrifted for $3.99, chunkalicious, and radiating that ugly 90's energy. So much fun clunking around in them.

I moved to New York!

And haven't posted since May because of it.

Still settling in and haven't taken many pictures. This was dinner at an Indian restaurant. Too delicious and open till 1am, which makes it dangerously available. Followed by rebel yells till 4am at a dive bar. Finally, hours that are giving me something to work with.

Short post. More to come soon. Gotta go work on that resume. Tomorrow I'm off to the Brooklyn Public Library to attend a program for library workers - job search strategies and resume reviews. Yes, please and thank you.

Fun times with P&P and my guy this weekend. Drinking/walking/drinking/walking. Visited Mexico and Tokyo, took breaks for Basquiat and salmon skin salad. Had some good laughs reminiscing about camotes and U2 fanatic tapes.

Mike and I celebrated our anniversary by visiting the 1940-1980 portion of MOCA's "First Thirty" exhibit. The exhibit was arranged in chronological order. I'm sure I've destroyed that order in this post.

We'll have to head back to catch the 1980-Now portion.

This scarf is wonderfully long, the fishnet weaving makes for a unique texture and its particular shade of brown makes me feel earthy and natural.

And this painting completely reminds me of this great David LaChapelle photo of Drew.

This is "denim taken to a whole new level". Yeah, I definitely got carried away. Home-made denim cut-offs, vintage levi's cropped vest, H&M jean jacket, last minute chopped white tank, blue tights with white polka-dots and blue thigh high flat boots.

Wearing all that blue made me feel far from blue. Though the picture below would suggest otherwise.

So much to say about denim. It goes with anything. It can be mismatched if done right. It's got the cozy factor. And well, it's just darn cute.

I love this H&M top, the sleeves have awesome button detail that doesn't show in the pic. Just trust! Worn with my Yves Saint Laurent purple satin boots found at....brace yourself....Ross. Have I posted this before? Probably. It was a crowning achievment. Worthy of duplicate postings.

These were taken on a Friday night when we had no plans and then we suddenly had some and I had all of five minutes to get ready. Quickly threw this crap on, went out to dinner......and then after eating we decided that staying in and relaxing was way more appealing. This outfit didn't get to live for very long. I'm ok with that.....for some reason, I just wasn't feeling it.

Usually when I stop and think about where I bought what I'm wearing, Ross comes up for at least two pieces. This outfit doesn't contain a single piece from Ross. Mystery of disgust solved?

Checked out the Nick Cave (not to be confused with the Nick Cave of the Bad Seed variety) exhibit at Fowler. His fashion abilities made me ache inside.

While his suits were intended to be examined from a sound perspective, I couldn't help but narrow mindedly stare at the detailed stitching and admire how the pieces clung perfectly to the contours of the mannequins. I'd love for him to make me a suit, sound or no sound.

The campus was crisp that day. I brought out my trusty DKNY Pure skirt. It's like wearing a cozy quilt around your bottom half. Bought it at an outlet with my mama for I believe fourteen buckaroos. Worn with my neon green baseball tee and cropped leather jacket.

When I heard of the Red Velvet Pancakes at Larchmont Bungalow, I nearly died. I love red velvet and I love breakfast foods. So Mike and I bundled up one rainy day and headed on over.

Nothin' like a quick pose in front of a Corona display.

I love this skirt, it reminds me of one of the first dates Mike and I went on. He had never tried pupusas (which seems insane, given the amount we've since consumed) so we found a sweet little restaurant that served the ensalada drink (!) and was quaint as all get out. When the jukebox started playing the spanish-recorded ABBA cd, I knew fate brought us together.

On our way home I had a near panic attack when I spotted a store with a rack out on the sidewalk, chock-full of vintage clothes. Without a second thought, Mike pulled over, "Let's go!"

The day was spontaneous, sunny, and full of tingly "I'm crushin' hard" feelings.

This animal adorned skirt is one of the gems I picked out that day. I cherish it not only for it's kitschiness, but also because of the Michael memories associated with it.

I'm ready-to-wear this stuff. While I'm digging the trendy new look for Autumn (read: black), I'm also pri-tty darn close to be being burned out on it. It's everywhere! You simply can't escape the black/studs/fringe/Balmain shoulders/creepers/combats/leather/lace/shredded jeans. Bahumbug.

Don't get me wrong, I fully support the grunge comeback and I'm rockin' it too, but it hasn't even gotten cold enough to really play up these layers, and they've massively permeated every blog/store/magazine for months. OK, I'll stop complaining - it's just that while I appreciate the always chic black look, it's easy to do so it seems like everyone is doing it. Aaaaaaaand I'm done.

My point is, the color in this collection was a welcoming sight.

Love the shoes - especially the ankle boot. The tan color gives the false appearance of a slingback, and then they hit you with the unexpected pink accents and that retro platform, mmmmm I could eat them.

And that dress? Nearly melted my eyes.

Damn.  August was my food blogging month.

So let's see........I'm done with school, hence the lack of non-food blog posts.  I'm a much better blogger when I have school to procrastinate.  But for serious, I made some bomb little salads, right?!?

These pics are from the Kamay at Puso Michael Jackson Tribute Event.  I didn't even think about dressing up MJ style, which blows my mind because I live for theme-dressing-up.  But Floyd came to the rescue and taped up my fingers.  I could feel the moonwalk in me after that.

We got donuts afterwards.  Bad idea.  Hard. 3am donuts.  No good.

I'd like to give a special shout out to my girl "A" - today is her first day as a supertrampy librarian! Woohoo!  I know she's gonna be so great!

Going out dancing tonight, and uh, I didn't want to overdo it. Yeah, that's why I didn't go to the gym.....

I did, however, do laundry. I love those lavender dryer bags from Trader Joe's. Mmmmm, I can smell it on me now. And their liquid detergent that has lavender oils? Three cheers for nature's perfume I say! :-D

I'm also digging the new Kogi beef stuff. We haven't actually tried it yet. Tonight will be our first voyage into the world of Trader Joe's Korean culinary delights. Post with results to come.

So basically, we got the entire crowd on their feet while simultaneously blowing the roof off the place.

Sunday Night Blog Post

Most of what we set out to do yesterday was accomplished. No pancakes, but we did have a brilliant breakfast of carnitas nachos/taquitos/quesadillas/etc. We then went to CC's Art Walk, but thanks to my unbelievable lack of punctuality, we only got to see a few exhibits. Though we did manage to catch a drum circle, get free vodka/oj's, and pop into mandrake in time to catch a glimpse of a flick which featured a jesus look alike taking a crap. Art!

We then headed to an amigos birthday party where we made plans for a record release party and music collaborations that are sure to revolutionize music as we know it.

Today I napped on Mike while he watched some Russian Sci-Fi.

Here's an old shot of my sister, brother, and I with our grandpa taken on the day of my sister's 8th grade graduation. So hot.

Let's take a moment to examine this in detail shall we?

First, look at my adorable gramps. I believe we had just woken him up! Such a cutie, he would always rub his hands together as if he were warming them up to spank us and then when we got near, would draw his hand back as if he were on the verge of said spank and shout "andale!" We loved it and would run away partly scared, mostly laughing.

Next we'll turn our attention to my sister. Let's start with that dress. Now, I, like most people, am annoyed with today's over usage of the word "fierce", but I'm not sure there is another word to describe this dress. And the fact that she wore a white mini to her 8th grade graduation? Again, fierce. You go you hot 8th grader you! And her hair? Much love for the spiral curling iron. So much love.

Let's move on. Move on to different hair. My brother's to be specific.

This kid is sporting a bowl cut that rivals that of Lloyd Christmas. This haircut was a never ending supply of ammunition for me growing up. Anytime my brother and I got into an argument, I quickly reminded him of his bowl cut.

And let me point out the hot pink stripe running around the collar of the teal shirt. This is why I can never get rid of clothes. Too many items become gems in five to ten years! A fact that my sister and I have been well aware of since, oh...birth. To this day we're hunting down a pair of shorts that we owned in fifth grade and were smart enough to hang onto. I'm not entirely convinced that she hasn't already found them and is hiding them from me.....

Next, let's look at my bangs. If you can even call them that! I think they start at the base of my neck. Starting "bangs" that far back on one's head is just not a good look for anyone. And when one is wearing that much" bang", it isn't necessary to curl and tease them. Mom.

And to end with the best part of this pic, let's take a look at the tans. Do tans more beautiful than this exist? These are "been playing hide-n-go-seek every weekend for the entire summer without even a drop of spf" tans. *Sigh* They just don't make 'em like they used to.

This blog has slowly become what Natalie wore and what she ate.

Original? Amusing? No.
The things that get me out of bed? Yes.

Last night Mike and I went to Luna Park where I ordered the mac n cheese and he got a cheeseburger. We followed it up with the smores. Oh, and we had an artichoke appetizer. And I had an alcoholic beverage.

The waitress made a comment about how much we ate....eek. And I woke up starving, but that's nothin new.

Today we're gonna hit up the CC Art Walk, a bday party, and I would love to make some pancakes and watch one of my netflix movies: My Own Private Idaho or Punish Me. Weekends....I'm telling you, that's where it's at.

Last Wednesday Mike and I went out to celebrate the end of the semester for me. I had a bomb lil strawberry mojito and an antipasto salad full of cheesy cheese and meaty meats.

The next day we headed out to the beach with my fam which was as muy exciting as muy exciting gets.....post with pics to come.

Last Friday my cita called to tell me that they had to put our Nigel to sleep. My family has owned a gazillion cats over the years, and while all of them are loved and special, Nigel was by far the coolest cat in town. We found this grown cat wandering around outside on xmas and took him in cuz it was cold. He was a true sweetheart and would always confuse us by suckling everything he came into contact with. When we took him to the vet we found out that he was suckling on everything because to our surprise, even though he was big, he was still a kitten!

I'll miss the lil guy but know he's probably chillaxin somewhere with ice cream and chips, his favorite snacks. Sure, this is a tore photo of me, but I love him so I don't care.

Yikes, I didn't realize the last thing I blogged about was a quesadilla.

I went through a phase of being soooooo over my blog. That and school has been a mad house and while this blog typically serves as school procrastination, I was so drained of life from school that I didn't even have energy to procrastinate with my blog. Energy to procrastinate for sure, just not enough for blogging.

But, I'm now over being over my blog. Kind of like that Expose song, "I'll never get over you getting over me ". Today is all about "jogging and blogging". Fabulous advice from fabulous Gabriel.

Funk Funk Funk

I'm in an incredible funk today. First off, my back still hurts. (See #20 from my FB "25 Things" aka "The hottest thing to hit the entire internet" below.) Second off, I don't know! If I knew the source of the funk, believe me, I would de-funk it.

Although, I do think that part of my funk can be attributed to this picture that Mike showed me before we went to sleep last night:

I think this picture led to my numerous nightmares, one of which was about this book that had images of dead people in it, but the original copy of this book actually had pieces of dead people glued to the pages and the other books were just copies of this original. Like they literally took this book that was filled with flesh and placed it on a copy machine to make the book images of dead people. So you could imagine how this original book looked....it was big, dirty, and could hardly close because it had bits of flesh hanging out of it. And the kicker? Guess who had to catalog this book?!?!?! Yeah, you get the point. My night sucked. And I guess I may have cataloging issues?

Also, I woke up in the middle of the night because of this loud crashing noise from inside my apartment and I cannot figure out what it is, though I'm pretty sure it was just the sound of this crazy static noise that our tv makes because we don't have cable but this crazy contraption set up for receiving basic channels. But at the time, in my delirious half-awake state I thought we were having another earthquake so I was waiting for a sign that the rumbling was going to continue and this certainly didn't put me back to sleep soon.

Whatever, I'm done feeling sorry for myself.

On a positive note, I saw Love Story for the first time and that Ali McGraw is such a charmer. I was inspired and tried to style my hair like hers but it was tough because my bangs are still in this awkward stage and I'm not sure I have the face for it. Not to mention that I had just washed my hair and there wasn't enough grease to complete the look, give me a few hours....oooh and I'm wearing my Mac Film Noir lipstick that I bought for my sister but then took back from her because I love it. So chola-tastic.

"25 Things" from that FB thing going around, aka "The hottest thing to hit the entire internet"

1. When I was in 8th grade my neighbor gave me and my sister a KROQ compilation cd with Jeff Buckley on it and I fell in love. When I met Mike in college it turned out that he had the same exact cd, and I fell in love again.

2. My last name is a combination of my dad's last name and my step-dad's.

3. I go to a lot of concerts, some of the most memorable being Jane's Addiction at the Hollywood Bowl, Madonna's Confessions tour, the New Kids on the Block reunion tour and Badly Drawn Boy always puts on a great show. Ooooh and Beck at the Bowl was nice....and so were the Brazilian Girls at Coachella....

4. I've only had two jobs in my entire life. I just realized this and am scared.

5. In high school I played the flute and xylophone in marching and symphonic band. The best band trip was when the color guard girls ran away, I think they took off to a Quinceanera, and while the cops and band teacher were trying to hunt them down, we blasted the radio and had a dance on the bus and didn't get home until 2 or 3am.

6. In second grade my teacher had us draw a picture of our favorite foods and posted them up on the wall. I drew biscuits and gravy.

7. My grandparents' names are Apolinar, Guadalupe and Virgina. Mike also has a grandma named Virginia. We love our grandparents very much.

8. Massages should be included in Universal Health Care. Not as a luxury, but because massages have true health benefits.

9. I wish LA had B95.

10. The Central Valley is hot, literally and figuratively. I'm glad I can call it home.

11. Two years ago I got my driver's license and I drove by myself on the freeway for the first time this past December. Come se dice....late bloomer?

12. Teachers and Librarians are undervalued and underpaid. Let's work together to change this, yeah?

13. Mike fills every nook and cranny of my heart. He's a hilarious kook! And he let's me be a kook, in fact, her prefers it! He's considerate as all get out and I don't think that that computer brain of his ever relaxes.

14. Netflix and Hulu are my sources for entertainment cuz I don't have cable and haven't for as long as I can remember.

15. Nigel, Annabelle, Cleo, Zoe, Sasha, Bert, Simon, Prince, Tigger is only a partial list of my family's pets' names.

16. One of my most cherished childhood memories is when my mom was mad at us for something and wanted us to stop joking around while eating dinner, so my brother washed his face with his soup to make me and my sister laugh so we would get in trouble.

17. It's really hard for me to not call my two younger sisters my baby sisters, even though they are in high school. I love those damn cuties!

18. While we're on the topic of siblings, mine are named Jacquelyn, Joaquin, Juliana, and Julissa. I'm the only one whose name doesn't start with a “J”, what the heck?

19. That reminds me, one time someone said to me, “What do you call a Mexican walking down the street? Joaquin!” and I said straight faced, “That's my dad's name.”

20. I found this youtube video of a Britney Spears video slowed down, so that you can learn the choreography. Today I pulled a muscle in my neck because of it. Always warm up the neck people, always warm up the neck.

21. In college we thought that someone broke into our apartment so we called 911. It turned out the door knob was broken and the wind had blown the door open so we called 911 back and said, “Um, we'd like to cancel that order” as if 911 is pizza.

22. I almost died from “Valley Fever” when I was three or four and my parents were attending grief counseling sessions for parents who have lost a child.

23. I like to copy everything my big sister does because it's ok for a little sister to copy their big sister and she's, in the words of Mrs. Turner, “simply the best”.

24. I think I'm getting old because Giant Drag, M83 and Arcade Fire are the only bands that have excited me in the past four years or so.

25. I'm so glad that Jacq and Phil moved to LA even though I was a total brat and told my sister that if she moved here I wasn't going to hang out with her all the time. I love them and am sorry for being mean. And I hope that they'll let me forever hang out with them cuz they're fun, now “GO TO BED”!
